Print PageHarvest time is here, and that means it’s time to reap what’s been sown across Richmond/Wayne County earlier in the year with fall fruits, flowers and vegetables quickly coming to peak fruition. Why not set a course to regional fields, farms and orchards to celebrate the coming season and make the most of this autumn?
Start by buzzing over to Dougherty Orchard in Cambridge City (the oldest family-owned and operated orchard in Indiana) to sample 33 different varieties of crisp apples, sip some sweet cider, and feast on donuts and dumplings. Fire up your camera to snap some selfies in the gorgeous fields of sunflowers at The Barn at Helm, then stock up on pumpkins and colorful mums to take home. Local Amish farms allow visitors to pick the perfect jack-o-lantern, and the Jones Family Farm expansive pumpkin field grows gourds big enough to hug for even more great photo ops, along with u-pick flowers for DIY bouquets.

Stretch your legs, commune a bit with Mother Nature and take a moment to appreciate the idyllic natural scenery with a fresh-air hike along the trails at Hayes Arboretum or Cope Environmental Center or a leisurely stroll up the picturesque Whitewater Valley Gorge Trail.
And don’t forget to mark your calendar for don’t-miss fall events all around Wayne County! Potterypalooza on September 7th comes to the Richmond Art Museum to showcase works by regional ceramicists. Autumn’s also in the air as Oktoberfest takes over Richmond’s Historic Depot District on Sept. 30 for a full day of German-themed beer, music, food and fun.

The Levi Coffin Days Festival presented by the Fountain City Lions Club Sept 21-22 commemorates the local abolitionist who, together with his wife Catharine, sheltered thousands of Freedom Seekers along their Underground Railroad journeys. Cambridge City Canal Days traditionally held the weekend after Labor Day include concerts, carnival games and a signature duck race, while the town’s annual Fall Antique Fair gives treasure hunters even more reason to spend some time exploring the Wayne County stretch of Antique Alley that runs along U.S. 40. In Centerville, you can grab pumpkins, mums and plenty of home decor from 100+ vendors during the Warm Glow Fall Festival Sept 28th!
